Join a three-hour hike through the McDowell Sonoran Preserve in Scottsdale, Arizona, guided by a professional from Mad Desert Trekking. The Scottsdale Desert Classic Hiking Adventure covers a loop trail in the McDowell Mountains, offering a deep dive into the Sonoran Desert's unique terrain and ecology. The journey begins at the trailhead where the guide will lead you through a landscape filled with native flora and fauna, geological features, and expansive desert views.

The trail includes stretches through canyons, washes, and up mountain ridges. As you ascend the switchbacks, you'll gain access to exceptional views of Scottsdale, Phoenix, and the surrounding areas. The hike peaks at a mountain saddle, providing a panoramic sight of the McDowell Mountain range and the vast desert extending westward. This hike is an opportunity to experience and understand the natural environment of one of the world’s largest city-owned preserves.

Any restrictions to participate?

  • Age: 12+
  • Physical limitations: Participants should be capable of walking 4.5 miles with about 745 feet of elevation gain.

Who can you accommodate for?

  • Children: All participants must pay to participate, children included.
  • Individuals with disabilities: The nature of the terrain may not be suitable for individuals with mobility impairments.
  • Pets: Sorry, no pets allowed.

What to expect on the day of the experience?

  • Duration: 3 hours.
  • What’s included: A professional guide, use of lightweight backpacks, purified bottled water, healthy trail snacks, sunscreen, and cold drinks after the hike.
  • Who will be present: You will have a guide with you at all times, and the group size is limited to 10 people.
  • Specific rules to follow: Participants are encouraged to follow all guide instructions and stay on designated trails for safety and to protect the environment.

How to prepare?

  • Weather dependency: The hike is planned to proceed rain or shine; however, it may be adjusted or canceled in cases of severe weather.
  • Arrival: Plan to arrive at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start time.
  • Parking: Details will be provided upon booking.
  • What to wear: Running or hiking shoes with good grip and tread (no sandals), hiking shorts or pants, long-sleeved layers in cooler weather, a hat, and sunglasses.
  • What to bring:
    • Please bring your own full re-usable water bottles to help reduce the use of single-use plastic bottles; additional purified water will be available.
    • Personal essentials such as additional snacks, medications, and cameras.

  • Gratuities for your guide are not included; a 20% tip is recommended for great service.

Returns, exchanges and cancellation

Unused Experience Vouchers can be returned within 30 days for a full refund to the original purchaser, no questions asked.

If you have any unused Experience Vouchers, you can exchange them for anything else in our marketplace, no matter when. If you choose an experience that's more expensive, you'll need to pay the difference, but if you choose one that costs less, you'll receive a credit towards your next booking.

No refunds are allowed once the experience is booked, but you can reschedule up to 48 hours before your experience, for a date within a year of the original booking. To reschedule, contact the experience provider directly. No-shows or rescheduling less than 48 hours in advance means losing the value of your experience.
