Full description

Join a three-hour guided hike to Tom's Thumb, a renowned 200-foot tall granite monolith in Scottsdale's McDowell Sonoran Preserve. Led by a local expert from Mad Desert Trekking, the journey starts at the trailhead and continues through the unique landscapes of the Sonoran Desert and McDowell Mountains. The route involves ascending switchbacks, providing expansive views of the surrounding preserve, the largest city-owned preserve globally.

This hike offers a direct encounter with Tom’s Thumb and the chance to see various geological features and native species of the area. Along the way, there are five overlooks, each presenting a distinct view of Scottsdale, Four Peaks, and the Valley of the Sun. Beyond the main trail, you’ll also have the opportunity to explore some less-traveled paths around Tom's Thumb, allowing for a more personal experience with the desert's natural beauty and quiet solitude.

Any restrictions to participate?

  • Age: 12+
  • Physical limitations: Participants should be capable of hiking 3-4 miles with about 700 feet of elevation gain.
  • Experience level: Suitable for hikers of all levels, though basic fitness is recommended due to the trail's demands.

Who can you accommodate for?

  • Children: All participants must pay to participate, children included.
  • Individuals with disabilities: The trail may not be accessible for wheelchairs or those with severe mobility limitations.
  • Pets: Sorry, no pets allowed.

What to expect on the day of the experience?

  • Duration: 3 hours
  • What’s included: Professional guidance, use of lightweight backpacks, purified bottled water, healthy trail snacks, sunscreen, and cold drinks post-hike.
  • Who will be present: A professional guide will be with you at all times. The group size will be limited to 10 participants.

How to prepare?

  • Weather dependency: The hike will proceed rain or shine, except in severe weather conditions.
  • Arrival: Please arrive at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start.
  • Parking: Parking information will be provided upon booking.
  • What to wear: Running or hiking shoes with good grip and tread, hiking shorts or pants, long-sleeved layers for cooler weather, a hat, and sunglasses.
  • What to bring:
    • Please bring your own reusable water bottles if possible. Additional purified water will be available.
    • Additional snacks, personal medications, and cameras are recommended.

Anything else I should know before going on this experience?

  • Gratuities for your guide are not included but are appreciated for great service.

Returns, exchanges and cancellation

Unused Experience Vouchers can be returned within 30 days for a full refund to the original purchaser, no questions asked.

No refunds are allowed once the experience is booked, but you can reschedule up to 48 hours before your experience, for a date within a year of the original booking. To reschedule, contact the experience provider directly. No-shows or rescheduling less than 48 hours in advance means losing the value of your experience.
